Evolution Websites

Human Evolution is the subject of this website created by Mr and Mrs Donn, to serve as resources for their students in elementary school. Fact sheets, video clips, powerpoint presentations, games, articles, clip art, and bibliographic information of leading scientists are all linked to this page. This site has so much information that it is appropriate for all ages. One drawback is the presence of ads from Google.

The Hominid Fossil is shown as a comparison of change in this website. Appropriate for 7th grade and up. Photographs of fossils and brain size can be compared while reading about their characteristics in the articles provided. The text is dense and long.

The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History has a website that asks: What does it mean to be human? Aimed for learners of all ages that are interested in movies and photographs that illustrate the journey through 5 million years of human evolution with FAQ and news of recent discoveries. One drawback is that this site will not be fully functioning until March 17, 2010.

Human Evolution is learned through videos, presentations, and pictures provided by this site. Created for k-12th grade students, this site offers teachers quizzes and activities that utilize the information in the videos as an extension. This would be great as a classroom tool, but unless the proper equipment (headphones) were provided the videos would have to be a teacher tool. Students create presentations with the pictures provided.

Biology and Evolution is discovered in 2 of the articles on this website. The evolution of dinosaurs, plants, birds, bugs and mammals can be read by anyone grade 3 and above. Links to many other evolution resources are also provided. Flash player is required to see some of the graphics.

HIV/Sexual Health Websites

The Girls Health website offers information about health, growing up, and articles and discussion about issues they face during their teen years. Appropriate for ages 10-16 the positive, supportive, and non-threatening messages motivate young ladies to choose healthy behaviors. A section for teachers is also provided with fact sheets and website resources for the students to have access too. One weakness is that readers can post on this website which makes there words available for everyone to see.

The Kids Health website offers information you can trust about kids and teens that's free of "doctor speak." Created for 3rd grade and up there is advice, perspective, and comfort provided about a wide range of physical, emotional, and behavioral issues that affect children and teens. There is also a weekly newsletter. One additional feature is that this website can be accessed in the Spanish language.

Peer to Peer was created to support the implementation of the Stop, Think, Be Safe Intervention. Aimed for youth ages 12-15 this site offers information about STDs and effective strategies for prevention to youth, parents, and teachers. One drawback is the research link is mainly linked writings, articles, and information from authors and organizations; it is a lacking in statistics that back up the statements.

Everything to Do with Being a Kid is a place to find fun stuff about kids. The focus is on family, body, food, health, school, feelings, safety, nearly teens, simply for you, and fun and games. Simply click on health and then childrens health. Drawback is that the site is more geared for adults than children.

Health Topics for younger kids is the focus of this site. Geared for children between the ages of 6-12 years this site offers understandable information mixed with illustrations and poetry of children that relate to the subject. One drawback is that the articles are pretty large for small children to be interested in.

Geography Websites

Geography is made simple by reading the information on this website. Geared for children 3rd-8th grade, this site offers information about the Earth's structure, atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, BGC cycles, and climates. There are real world examples, live camera's, and activities and games. One weakness is that there is advertising at the bottom of the information links.

National Geographic Kids offers children K-12 interesting news, live cams, games and interactives, articles, stories, videos, and brain teasers. There are several advertisements so they might not be appropriate to use in the classroom. Must have Adobe Flash Player.

Altapedia offers children 5th-12th full color physical maps and political maps as well as key facts and statistics on countries of the world. Classroom resources are provided for teachers and parents. Advertisements are present on this site.

Travel the world on this website geared for k-3 students. There are maps, pictures, videos, and cute cartoon characters to appeal to the interest of kids. Teacher resources are provided. Classroom appropriate with no advertising.

Distinctive Geography is a website for students 7th grade and up. There is information about the geographic earth with statistics, maps and linked resources to navigate. Classroom appropriate with no advertising.

History Websites

The Official Kids Portal to the U.S. Government is provided in this website that links many different government agencies, schools and educational organizations that are geared to the interest of children K-8th grade and their teachers. The focus of this webpage is the history of all people in America.

The Past Belongs to Kids at this website. There are articles from early man, to recent historical events as well as an online history textbook, history games, and historical quotes from famous people from the past and the present. Children K-8th grade will learn historical facts playing the games that are fun and challenge their brains. Free downloads if you don't have the proper plug-in.

The Library of Congress has provided this website for people of all ages, but especially for children and their families. There are videos, information facts, games, mysteries, songs, quilt stitching, exploration of states, stories, pictures, maps, side by side generation information, clues to the past, teacher resources, and time lines of American history.

United States history would not be complete without considering the Heartland. Designed for children grades 3-12, this website offers information on the history of Illinois from a diverse background of perspectives. There is a time line that can be accessed to discover the history of this state through interactive stories and clues that inform the reader.

The first Thanksgiving is represented by this website that has information for teachers, kids (5-13 years) and parents. There are illustrations, virtual learning trips, facts, lesson plans, activities, interactive games, and printables. Drawbacks to this website are that it really caters to teachers and not the children. It is more a resource for teachers and parents of children.

Social Studies Economics Websites

Social Studies for Kids is a website that offers a plethora of resources for kids to learn about business and money. There are fun facts, games, glossaries, newsletters, current events, frequently asked questions and a forum for learning more.

The United States Mint has a website that offers games, cartoons, information and pictures on coins and medals, coin news, a collectors club, and the history of the U.S. mint. This website is geared for students of all ages, teachers and parents.

A You Tube visual presentation helps children understand the concepts of supply and demand and their impact on price. Geared for students k-10. One weakness is that You Tube has so many noneducational resources that it would not be allowed within the school.

At Kids Turn Central children 6yrs. to adult will learn about investing, the history of money, how to save money, money management, what money looks like, making money, making change, and budgeting. You will need Adobe flash player to access the games.

Economics for Kids is a fun resource for learning about money, basic economics, supply and demand, interdependence, the stock market, and more. Click on the links for fun games and information. The site is geared for students 3rd to 8th grade as well as their parents and teachers.

Civics Websites

Ben's guide to the U.S. Government for Kids has interactive and printable games that are an educational component of the Government Printing Office. This site provides learning tools for K-12 students, parents, and teachers. The resources show students how the government workks, has primary source materials, and suggestions for carrying out civic responsibilities. The information seems a little advanced for the younger children so they may need assistance.

The U.S. House of Representatives Clerk has created a website that teaches students of all ages. There is information about the role, history, and Members of the House of Representatives. Learners are encouraged through information pages, coloring pages, mazes, pictures, and more. There are resources for teachers that include links to information, activities, and lesson plans that accompany the content on this site. Although the website is geared for kindergarten and up, the teacher would need to be selective in choosing the activities, some are not appropriate for their readiness level.

At the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum there are a variety of educational programs that have activities for students from pre-K to Grade 12. These programs are designed to reinforce the themes of the exhibits of the museum and state curriculum by focusing on the White House, the presidency, U.S. and local government, and U.S. history. The drawback is that the programs are available to teachers by reservation only. Scheduling would be important to utilize this tool.

Congress for Kids is a website that gives children 4th-12th grade access to interactive, fun-filled exerineces designed to teach the foundation of the federal government and how it affects them. This site has full-color illustrations and engaging activities that introduce students to a new skill, but of knowledge, or test knowledge.

Inside the President's House has facts and fun for all ages. There is a blueprint of the white house, information about the white house, fun facts, and pictures of the presidents and the first pets. Even though it is advertised to be for all ages, elementary children would need scaffolding to find this site educational.

Space Websites

NASA Kids Club is a website that has interactive games, puzzles, videos, articles, current news, art activities, and information about space related content. The website also has information for parents. The grade level is for students k-5th. This site mixes fun and education and has something for everyone.

Space and Earth Science has information for grade school children. The focus of this website is that learning and experimenting with science can be done anywhere. This site has links to several other web pages that focus on Astronomy resources, interactive games, information, activities, space travel educational program information, and fun pictures.

The Educational sites linked to this website are all activities geared for students grades 3-12. You can learn about stars, comets, planets, galaxies and other space objects. Click on Amazing Space and you will find the Hubble Telescope the major theme of this page. There are activities articles, videos, virtual viewing opportunities of the stars, homework help, and information for parents and teachers.

Planet Fast Facts can be found at Science Kids. This site has information about every planet within our solar system. Students in 3rd through 8th grade will find descriptive information about these "amazing objects" that have catchy illustrations to grab the eye. One drawback is that there is not in-depth information about any one planet.
